Les Éditions de Minuit sold into Gallimard-stable | Prix Jean d'Ormesson

Les Éditions de Minuit sold into Gallimard-stable

French publisher Les Éditions de Minuit is the latest to be bought by Le groupe Madrigall, the Gallimard holding company that already includes leading literary publishers P.O.L, Denoël, and Flammarion, among others; see, for example, the report in Le Figaro, Gallimard rachète les mythiques Éditions de Minuit.
Les Éditions de Minuit is a relatively small house, but with a very impressive list; this is a significant consolidation of literary publishing in France.

Philip Roth and the “Writers from the Other Europe” Series

Covers from the Writers from the Other Europe series

In the spring of 1972, fascinated by the life and work of Franz Kafka, Philip Roth decided to visit Prague. He returned the following year to see how writers were managing to work under “conditions that were utterly alien to my own writing experience.” In preparation, he read as much as he could find of the work of contemporary Czech writers. He met and became friends with several writers, which led him to look for works in English translation by novelists working throughout Eastern Europe — still behind the Iron Curtain — since the end of World War Two.

from this, he was able to interest Penguin Books in starting a series of reprints called “Writers from the Other Europe,” for which he served as general editor. Between 1976 and 1983, the series published a total of 17 books, starting with Kundera’s Laughable Loves and Ludvík Vaculík’s The Guinea Pigs. As Roth wrote,

The purpose of this paperback series is to bring together outstanding and influential works of fiction by Eastern European writers. In many instances they will be writers who, though recognized as powerful forces within their own cultures, are virtually unknown in America. It is hoped that by reprinting selected Eastern European writers in this format and with introductions that place each work in its literary and historical context, the literature that has evolved in “the other Europe” during the postwar decades will be made more accessible to an interested American readership.

Roth’s reputation and significant network of contacts enabled him to get an impressive range of authors to write introductions. Contributors included Carlos Fuentes, Irving Howe, Joseph Brodsky, Heinrich Boll, Angela Carter, Czesław Miłosz, Leszek Kołakowski, Jan Kott, John Updike, Josef Škvorecký.

In most cases, the books had already been published in English translations, usually by academic presses. Schulz’s The Street of Crocodiles, for example, had been published in Michael Kandel’s translation by Walker and Company in 1963; Konwicki’s Dreambook was published by the MIT Press in 1969; neither attracting any real notice.

Among other things, the effort led to the discovery of the work of the Polish writer Bruno Schulz after the publication in 1977 of his two books, The Street of Crocodiles and The Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass. When Roth learned that Isaac Bashevis Singer had been one of the few to review The Street of Crocodiles when it was originally published in 1963, he contacted Singer and the two men had a long conversation about Schulz that was later reprinted in the New York Times. Singer confessed to Roth,

The more I read Schulz — maybe I shouldn’t say it — but some of the stories, when I read him, I said he’s better than Kafka. There is greater strength in some of his stories. Also he’s very strong in the absurd — though not in a silly way, but in a clever way. I would say that between Schulz and Kafka there is something that Goethe calls Wahlverwandtschaft, an affinity of souls which you have chosen for yourself.

Cynthia Ozick, who went on to write a novel (The Messiah of Stockholm) based on the rumor that Schulz, who was killed in the Holocaust, had been survived by a son who himself became a writer. Ozick called Schulz one of “the most original imaginations in modern Europe’; John Updike, who wrote the introduction to The Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass, rated Schulz as “one of the great writers, one the great transmogrifiers of the world into words.” Jerzy Kosinski initiated an annual literary prize in Schulz’s name, to be awarded by a PEN American Center jury to a writer considered “insufficiently known.”

Covers from the Writers from the Other Europe series

Long after the series ended, its reputation lived on. In 1993, Herbert Mitgang called it “indispensable.” In their New York Times “By the Book” interviews, both William Vollmann and Nicole Krauss mentioned it. Vollmann singled out Konwicki’s A Dreambook for Our Time as an “underappreciated masterpiece,” “one of the many treasures from the late, lamented” series. Krauss said, “I’m a suck for that entire ‘Writers from the Other Europe’ series that Penguin and Philip Roth published in the ’70s and ’80s.”

Even better, virtually all of the books are still in print nearly 40 years later — in a few cases, from Penguin itself.

The 17 titles in the “Writers from the Other Europe” series are:

  • The Guinea Pigs, by Ludvík Vaculík
  • Ferdydurke, by Witold Gombrowicz
  • The Joke, by Milan Kundera
  • The Farewell Party, by Milan Kundera
  • The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, by Milan Kundera
  • Laughable Loves, by Milan Kundera
  • The City Builder, by George Konrád
  • The Case Worker, by George Konrád
  • The Polish Complex, by Tadeusz Konwicki
  • A Dreambook for Our Time, by Tadeusz Konwicki
  • A Tomb for Boris Davidovich, by Danilo Kiš
  • Ashes and Diamonds, by Jerzy Andrzewjewski
  • Closely Watched Trains, by Bohumil Hrabal
  • This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen, by Tadeusz Borowski
  • Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass, by Bruno Schulz
  • The Street of the Crocodiles, by Bruno Schulz
  • Opium and Other Stories, by Géza Csáth

Robert Penn Warren διαβάζει το ποίημά του Tiberius On Capri

Graham Greene and Robert Penn Warren on Capri

Greene and Catherine Walston at Anacapri (from Norman Sherry’s Life of Graham Greene)

Όμως πώς γράφτηκε αυτό το ποίημα από τον συγγραφέα του μυθιστορήματος "Όλοι οι άνθρωποι του βασιλιά";

For centuries the myth of the Fountain of Youth was continually written about in fables, folktales, and scribed hypotheses. However, according to a new study, it may actually be one’s consumption of writing that acts as a fountain of youth. Yes, among its many other documented benefits, a new study has demonstrated that reading yields a greater lifespan.
The study was published in Social Science & Medicine’s September issue, entitled: “A Chapter A Day: Association of Book Reading with Longevity.” Surveying some 3,635 people — all aged 50 or older — the study found book readers live 23 months (nearly two years) longer than non-readers. The study also found that readers of 3.5 hours or more/week were 23% less likely to die than non-readers. Almost a fourth! However, what really sets this study apart is its distinction in reading material. As the paper’s introduction states:
“While most sedentary behaviors are well-established risk factors for mortality in older individuals, previous studies of a behavior that is often sedentary, reading… have not compared the health benefits of reading-material type.”
In an age that is entirely oversaturated in terms of data, information, and lolcat memes — a huge chunk of which arrives before us in the form of words and blurbs, and less often, sentences and paragraphs — the distinction in reading-material type is a crucial one to make. The study concluded that periodicals did not factor into the survival advantage granted by reading. In essence: books fend off the grim reaper with greater vigor than periodicals. One of the academics who authored the paper, Avni Bavishi, explained this to The Guardian:
“We uncovered that this effect is likely because books engage the reader’s mind more — providing more cognitive benefit, and therefore increasing the lifespan… we were impressed with the magnitude of the difference of effect between reading books and reading newspapers/magazines.”
According to the paper, the reasoning in the survival difference between periodical-reading and book-reading is double-fold:
“First, it promotes ‘deep reading,’ which is a slow, immersive process; this cognitive engagement occurs as the reader draws connections to other parts of the material, finds applications to the outside world…Second, books can promote empathy, social perception, and emotional intelligence, which are cognitive processes that can lead to greater survival.”
What should you do with those two extra years? Well, why not use them to read even more books?
“the benefits of reading books include a longer life in which to read them … The robustness of our findings suggests that reading books may not only introduce some interesting ideas and characters, it may also give more years of reading.”
Now, we wait for a study breaking down the life-spans and survival benefits among the passionate readers of particular authors. Do, for example, readers of Toni Morrison live longer than Bukowski devotees? Shakespearean thespians than George Eliot fans? The possibilities are endless (so long as we keep reading).

Short Édition

The short story—the beginning writer’s training wheels, the chosen purview for literary giants like Alice Munro and Flannery O’Connor, the slightly pretentious little brother to the novel—is coming to the streets of Grenoble, France in an unexpected container: a vending machine.
The southeastern French city will soon be home to a handful of devices that dispense short stories rather than sugary snacks or soft drinks. The machines will offer a choice of stories one, three, or five minutes long, and their bank of 600 short stories, determined by the publisher Short Édition’s thousands of subscribers and writers, is free of charge.
In a 2012 interview with The Atlantic, Sadie Stein, The Paris Review's deputy editor, explained how short stories are distinct from novels:
A short story, when it’s good, doesn’t draw you into a comforting world; it shakes you up. It’s not … what you want to read before going to sleep: It’s a different kind of intellectual and emotional commitment.
Perhaps one of the most artful descriptions The Atlantic has published on the short story was written in 1949 in the form of an essay by the novelist and short-story writer Eudora Welty, entitled “The Reading and Writing of Short Stories”:
Where does beauty come from, in the short story? Beauty comes from form, from development of idea, from after-effect. It often comes from carefulness, lack of confusion, elimination of waste—and yes, those are the rules. But that can be on occasion a cold kind of beauty, when there are warm kinds. And beware of tidiness. Sometimes spontaneity is the most sparkling kind of beauty—Katherine Mansfield had it. It is a fortuitous circumstance attending the birth of some stories, like a fairy godmother that has—this time—accepted the standing invitation and come smiling in.

Complete access to all 20th century Norwegian literature

This is pretty awesome: Kopinor (the Norwegian copyright-handling agency) and the Norwegian Nasjonalbiblioteket (National Library) have announced they're comprehensively putting Norsk Litteratur fra hele det 20. århundre på nett -- making some 250,000 20th century works of Norwegian literature (essentially all of it), freely accessible online (big caveat: only to Norwegian IP addresses ...) atBokhylla.no.
       Some 50,000 works -- from 1690s, 1790s, 1890s, and 1990s -- are already available there -- and soon it'll be a whole lot more.
In-copyright titles will only be accessible online (i.e. you can't download them -- as you can the out of copyright ones), authors and publishers will be remunerated (presumably much like the British Public Lending Right) -- and books can be withdrawn from circulation upon request (don't do it, authors, don't do it !).
See also, for example, Kaja Korsvold's summary article inAftenposten, 250.000 bøker blir tilgjengelige i Norges digitale bibliotek; no doubt the English-language media will pick story this up pretty soon too .....

William Golding

Η ζωή του γενικά ήσυχη, ώσπου μια επερχόμενη βιογραφία, William Golding: The Man Who Wrote Lord of the Flies , απολύπτει ότι στα 18 του ο Γουίλιαμ παραλίγο να βιάσει, όπως κατέγραψε στα προσωπικά του χαρτιά, μια 15χρονη.

Ο βιογράφος, καθηγητής στην Οξφόρδη, Τζον Κάρευ, τρίβει τα χέρια του που ίσως πουλήσει κανένα αντίτυπο παραπάνω, η κατά τα άλλα-μάλλον χωρίς εντάσεις- βιογραφία του συγγραφέα. Όμως ίσως πέσει στην ίδια παγίδα με τον συγγραφέα που έστησε για λόγους διασημότητας. Όποιος αρχίσει να ξαναδιαβάζει τον Γκόλντινγκ θα λαμβάνει υπόψη του έναν παραλίγο βιαστή φωτίζοντας με αυτή την σκοπιά το έργο του, ή μήπως θα έπρεπε να αγνοήσει τις νεανικές αταξίες και γενικότερα τις πράξεις και ημέρες των συγγραφέων και να επικεντρωθεί σε όποιο κείμενο-δημιουργικό και μόνον-έχει μπροστά του;

Πόσο γρήγορα διαβάζουμε ένα κείμενο;

Pat Kavanagh
